Out of Our Element.

I’m moved to paint subjects with natural magical qualities that are perceived
with close scrutiny or shifts in perspective – shadows that flow across a snow-
bank ocean, the electric vitality of bare winter trees, lush tangles of roots, bone-
deep faces brought to light by an MRI, and what is revealed when we immerse
ourselves in water. Like magical realism in Latin American literature, where
supernatural influences are considered commonplace, through my paintings I
interpret the otherworldliness that permeates our everyday experience.
