While living in Puerto Rico I began playing with an image of web-like vertical drips, and soon
after I came across one of Old San Juan's amazing banyan trees, and it struck me as a likely
inspiration. These enormous trees have hundreds of ropey roots that hang from their branches
to the ground (see an example here). I titled this first painting Roots. Now I notice this drip
pattern everywhere, from condensation on windows in the morning, to streaks of milkshake left
in a glass, to the streams of rust on the Pelham reservoir dam and the walls of the Seventh
Avenue F subway station. The ubiquity of this pattern makes it even more intriguing to me.
